5 Ways You Can Minimize Indoor Air Pollution

  |     |   Apartment Living

HouseplantsMost people think of air pollution as something specific to outdoor environments, but unfortunately, indoor air pollution has been an increasing problem in recent years. Energy-efficient construction designed to minimize drafts from doors and window seals is the primary culprit. Fortunately, strategies exist for keeping indoor air pollution levels low. Following are five ways that residents of our apartments in Dallas, TX, can keep their indoor air fresh and healthy.

Cut Down on Clutter

Clutter attracts dust and provides habitat for mold spores. Too much of it also contributes to a lack of air circulation. Keeping clutter to a minimum helps ensure that you'll breathe easier.

Use Natural Cleaning Products

Harsh chemicals found in many over-the-counter cleaning products often wreak havoc on indoor air quality. Look for natural products instead. You can even make your own using ingredients such as white vinegar, baking soda, and powdered borax. Keep in mind that many commercial cleaning products contain a great deal of superfluous fragrance, which irritates respiratory membranes and triggers allergic reactions.

Remove Footwear at the Entryway

Dust, pet dander, pollen, mold spores and other particulates frequently enter indoor environments via the soles of shoes. Removing your outdoor footwear at the entryway of your apartment helps keep potential irritant levels down. Using a doormat to wipe your feet before coming inside cuts down on the presence of potential pollutants even more.

Dust and Vacuum on a Regular Basis

Dust builds up quickly in home environments, so dust and vacuum on a regular basis to keep it under control. Avoid using feather dusters—these merely stir up the dust. Use a microfiber cloth instead. Consider using a vacuum with a HEPA filter if you've got pets in the home or have allergy issues with dust, pollen or mold.

Cultivate Houseplants

Certain types of houseplants, such as peace lilies, spider plants, aloe vera, and snake plants act as natural air cleaners. As an added bonus, these are all extremely easy to grow and provide significant aesthetic appeal to any indoor environment.
