Making Fido Feel at Home

  |     |   Pets

Small PuppyPets are part of our lives. They worm their way into our hearts and never let go. For the most part, our pets help us manage our emotions better and bring us endless hours of joy. As exciting as moving to a new home can be for you, it can be a little unsettling for your furry friend. Taking these steps can help fido feel at home as you both adjust to your new digs.

Be Prepared for a Little Extra “Neediness”

Your pet might need a little extra reassurance from you that all is well in the world. That may include a little extra loving or a little extra walking (in the event that your pet has a lot of pent-up energy to exert). Plan to spend a little more time playing fetch, cuddling on the couch, or exploring your new neighborhood until you both feel a little more “at home.”

Bring a Few of Your Pet’s Favorites

While it might be appealing to start fresh with everything, it’s a good idea to bring a few familiar favorites along for your pet. You can always exchange them for “all-new” items once you’re both acclimated to your new home. Until then, the ratty old blanket and well-chewed rabbit are familiar and comforting for your pet. The same goes for the familiar food bowl, too.

Keep Fido on a Leash

Remember that your pet has never been here before. It’s all new and strange to them. It may even be a little frightening and exciting at the same time. But, if your pet gets lost, he won’t know his way home yet, making it a devastating event for both of you. Even if you are diligent about keeping him on a leash, it’s always a good idea to have him microchipped so you can be reunited if he does make a great escape.
